Cine-Excess VI is honoured to present one of the most iconic titles from the Italian giallo craze of the 1970s. Your Vice Is A Locked Door And Only I Have The Key adapted a variety of suspense and horror techniques to cast a critical eye over Italy’s changing landscape during the death spasms of the so-called economic miracle. Drawing on a variety of sources from Edgar Allen Poe to Clouzot’s Les Diaboliques, Martino’s movie provided new levels of sophistication to the giallo format, while retaining its visceral and confrontational edge. The film also showcases an electrifying central performance from Luigi Pistilli as the nihilistic writer Oliviero Ruvigny, with macabre and erotic fixations for both his dead mother and abused wife Irene (played with career-topping brilliance by Anita Strindberg). When a psycho-sexual killer begins dispatching local teenage girls, police suspicion falls on Oliviero, whose immorality is further compounded by the arrival of his sexually precocious niece Floriana (Edwige Fenech), unleashing a murderously erotic quest that envelops all three characters…

Sergio Martino has personally chosen this screening to accompany his visit to Cine-Excess VI, and we are delighted that he will be introducing the film at The Italian Cultural Institute on Friday 25th May at 10.30pm, following his participation in a special in the special ‘Years With(out) Lead’ panel discussion.
